Sustainable by Design: Small Wonder’s Certified Organic Winery & Tour Experience in the Tamar Valley

Set on our certified organic vineyard in Tasmania’s Tamar Valley, Small Wonder’s winery was designed with care, craft, and sustainability in mind. Making wine onsite has allowed us to improve quality, reduce our environmental impact, and create a uniquely immersive experience for visitors seeking authentic Tamar Valley wine tours and wine tastings near Launceston.

A Certified Organic Winery in Tasmania’s Tamar Valley

Our vineyard and winery are proudly certified organic, producing expressive cool climate wines in harmony with nature. Every detail, from vineyard management to cellar practices, is guided by place, precision, and purpose.

Winery Architecture Designed for Place & Purpose

Working with Kerry Hill Architects in association with Launceston-based architectural firm Edwards  + Simpson, we set out to create a contemporary interpretation of the agricultural shed—functional, calm, and deeply connected to its surroundings.

Nestled in native bushland just behind the cellar door, three elegant buildings stretch East to West across our cool climate site. With a total footprint of 1,920 m², the larger structure is divided into three long, pitched-roof forms arranged in parallel and connected by an internal corridor. A key design feature was the separation of white and red winemaking to streamline flow and efficiency.

“We wanted the winery to be a calm and well-organised space, even during the busy peak of harvest when large volumes of grapes are processed. An efficient layout minimises double handling and allows more time for attention to detail in the wine.” – Andrew Trio, Overstory Head Winemaker

The first barn-like structure is dedicated to receiving and processing Pinot Noir grapes. The second, the longest, handles white grape processing and houses two impressive 13.5 m × 9 m barrel rooms. Meanwhile, the third contains the bottling line and storage for cased wine, ready for distribution.

Our layout enables visitors to observe all stages, from grape delivery and sorting through fermentation to barrel storage and bottling, in a safe and controlled environment.

On-Site Winemaking: Quality Meets Sustainability

By processing fruit at our organic winery in Tasmania, we cut transport emissions, improve efficiency, and elevate wine quality.

Key Sustainability Features

- 60 kW solar energy system
- Rainwater harvesting and reuse
- Wastewater treated and recycled for vineyard irrigation
- Double-walled tanks and insulation for efficient temperature control
- Sustainable, locally sourced building materials
- Composting of grape skins to return nutrients to the vineyard

‘Sustainability was the driving focus in the design and construction of the Small Wonder winery... We aim to keep everything on-site, treat it, reuse it, and ensure every byproduct goes back into the vineyard and contributes to the making of next year’s wine.’ – Ockie Myburgh, Small Wonder Winemaker

This efficiency doesn’t just benefit the planet, it elevates the wine. We hand-pick fruit at optimum flavour and acidity, then process without delay. Every parcel stays separate by site, soil, clone, and vigour, giving us the freedom to explore nuance and preserve purity of expression.

“Making our wine on-site provides a deeper understanding of the expression of our fruit and more opportunities to explore techniques to bring our vineyard’s unique qualities to life in the wine.” – Andrew Trio, Overstory Head Winemaker
